Therapy Dog workshop

Many people ask "how do you train a therapy dog?"

While there is training involved so your therapy dog knows what is expected of her and what to do, this workshop's first priority is helping the handlers to know if they and their dogs are right for therapy work, what type(s) of therapy work would be best for the teams, and what training they need to be good therapy dog teams.  Our Therapy Dog workshop will give you information on the many ways therapy dogs are used and the places that welcome therapy dogs.

Therapy dogs and their handlers must have solid temperments.  They cannot be easily upset by sudden loud or unexpected noises, moving objects, crowded areas or emotional situations.   Some of these things can be trained for but there has to be some innate calmness to be a succesful Therapy dog team.   Both the handler and dog must be willing to give unconditional love.  This is not just a hobby for your dog.  Therapy dog work is a serious commitment to give to others.

Equipment needed for the workshop:  dog wearing a flat collar, limited slip (martingale) collar, head halter, or body harness (no obedience chain collars, prong collars, or electronic collars), 4 foot leather or nylon leash, a mat for your dog to lay on, lots of yummy, soft treats, water bowl, crate (you may also use your vehicle -- this is to give our dogs some down time), a stuffed Kong or other quiet toy for your dog's down time, veterinarian records with current negative fecal and rabies vaccine, and and any comfort items for yourself.  If your dog is used to eating a meal during the workshop time, feel free to bring it along.

This workshop will consist of discussion, observation of registered therapy dog teams, and hands-on training.  Fee includes all materials, snacks, dinner, and a goodie bag.  Cost for one handler/one dog -- $95, additional handlers/same dog -- $25, handlers/auditors only -- $45.
